  2. Early Life • Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany on Dec.17th 1770 • He was born to Johann Van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Van Beethoven • On March 26th 1778, Beethoven gave his very first public performance, at age 7 • At age 17 Prince Maximillian sent Beethoven to Vienna to meet Mozart

  3. FrenchRevolution • Beethoven lived during the French revolution and the Napoleonic wars • In May 1804 “The Eroica” was written in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte. However before the symphony had been completed, Bonaparte declared himself emperor. Beethoven became furious. He had hoped when Napoleon came into power he would bring back democratic ideals of the French Revolution.

Beethoven stated: “So he too is nothing more then an ordinary man” “Now he will trample on all human rights and indulge only his own ambition, he will place himself above everyone and become a tyrant” • Beethoven later changed the title to “Sinfonia Erocia” The heroic symphony • Beethoven’s beliefs about the revolutions were reflected in his music.

Music • No composer was more responsive to the vast changes in social structure and changes in attitude at that time, then Beethoven • His music was not only emotional but had political ideas was well • When ideas of social changes were being embraced, he wanted his music to be directed towards the benefit of the poor

The Romanticism period appreciated imagination and emotion over intellect and reason • Beethoven’s romanticism transformed every kind of music he composed for example his romance no.1 and 2 were called romances for their light sweet tone • During this period, every symphony Beethoven wrote had something sensational or strange about it

  7. Beethoven’s 5th symphony was an expression of his determination to “take fate by the throat” • The 5th symphony sounds very familiar to the French Revolution hymns and marching songs.

  8. Nobility • Nobility began to enjoy music and learned to play instruments • Nobility kept composers and musicians as servants • Beethoven challenged these concepts • When a nobleman talked during his performance he stopped to declare “for such pigs, I do not play”

Personal Life • In 1815 Beethoven’s hearing greatly decreased, he could no longer hear • Beethoven showed a clear liking for aristocratic company • Most of the women Beethoven fell for, were those of aristocratic background, usually married women • Stated to Prince Lichnowsky “you are what you are, there are thousands of princes, but only one Beethoven”

  10. Beethoven’s Death • In 1826 Beethoven caught a severe cold, and passed away on March 26th 1827 at the age of 56 • Estimated 10,000-30,000 people attended Beethoven’s funeral • By Beethoven’s death the image of the composer had been transformed into that of the romantic hero

  11. Final Thoughts • He had become a public figure, which no composer had done before • He was more than just a composer, he broke free from the mentality of servant. • He was an artist that wrote for posterity
