Spider Silk Cloth Strong Silk • The golden orb weaver spider produces silk that is flexible, but stronger than steel and almost as strong as Kevlar. • Over 70 people in Madagascar worked on collecting golden orbs and another dozen extracted 80 feet of silk from each to produce the first 100% spider silk textile. • If spider silk is one day able to be manufactured, it would have countless uses including: • Parachutes • Bullet-proof vests • Army bridges for quick and easy build

Web Glue • Spiders produce special web glue to make web sticky • The glue is made from domains of glycoprotein that are produced from opposite strands of the same DNA sequence • The ability for humans to use the web glue could lead to biobased adhesivesthat are very strongand durable. • In the future, could possibly be used as an alternative to stitches. Spider glue, STAT!

Eating Insects • A spider’s main source of food is insects. • Insects eat crops or plants • Therefore, Spiders help keep crops safe • This is beneficial because it helps farmers do well, which means the production of more food, which helps EVERYBODY! • Spiders also eat yellow flies, which no one likes because of their painful bites! Oh No! A fly! Don’t worry. I’ll save you!

  5. Conclusion • Spiders, although scary, are very beneficial to humans. • The silk is very strong and can one day be used in many different, yet helpful ways • The web glue can lead to very strong biobased adhesives • Eating insects protects crops, which helps farmers or gardeners
