  1. Voice, Tone, Mood: What are these and why do they matter?

  2. VOICE Voice refers to an author’s style and the qualities that make it unique. Voice conveys the author’s personality and character.

  3. TONE Tone refers to an author’s attitude (established through his/her voice) toward his/her subject, audience, and/or self.

  4. MOOD Mood refers to the feeling the reader gets from a piece of writing (based on voice and tone of the author)

  5. A few more terms to know:(how an author establishes voice) 1. diction: word choice 2. denotation: the dictionary definition of a word 3. connotation: the associated, secondary meaning of a word 4. syntax: sentence structure 5. point of view: the perspective from which an author tells his/her story or presents information
