  2. About India • India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country by area, has the second highest population in the country with over 1.2 billion people. • India got its independence on August 15th, 1947 • The name 'India' is from the River Indus. • Jews and Christians have lived in India since 200 B.C. and 52 A.D.

  3. Traditional customs Engagement Ceremony: A formal ring exchange to start it off. The girl puts the ring on the boy’s right hand ring finger. The boy puts the ring on the girl’s left hand ring finger. The ring finger is a belief that it connects to the veins of the heart. In some ceremonies a priest is comes to recite holy mantras. The groom and bride are made to meet each other’s family. A lunch or dinner is then organized, depending on the time of the ceremony, for all the guests and family members.

  4. The wedding day The pre-wedding ceremonies include engagement and arrival of the groom's party at the bride's home. The post wedding ceremonies involve welcoming the bride to her new home.

  5. Who takes part in the ceremony • Bride • Groom • Priest • Bride's parents • Groom's parents • Bride's maternal uncle • Bride's brother, cousin, or friend • Best man • Chorus: a few women who know how to sing the traditional Indian slokas • Flower girls are optional

  6. Bride attire Traditionally, the bride wears a red or red and white sari. The sari should be draped modestly over her hair. One thing of the bride's wardrobe which is popular is to use henna or mehndi to decorate her hands and feet.

  7. Groom attire The groom wears a kafni which is a long shirt going to the knees with pijamo which are leggings or dhoti, sort of an overgrown loincloth. The groom might also wear a turban.

  8. Guest attire • Saris consists of three pieces: the underskirt, the sari and the sari blouse. • Wear bright colors • Don’t wear red because that is what the bride wears.

  9. Facts • White and black are not worn at Indian weddings. White is worn at Indian funerals and black indicates mourning. • Hindu wedding are only allowed to take place on auspicious days. You have to talk to a price to decide on a day. • During the wedding ceremony it is traditional for the bride’s sisters and cousins to take the groom’s shoes. • It is traditional that during the wedding ceremony that the bride and groom walk seven circles around the holy fire.

  10. Different from the US • It is a tradition for the bride’s to wear white, and at Indian weddings they wear red. • We are allowed to chose are wedding days. They have to talk to a priest and decide a date. • White and black are worn at our wedding by the grooms and it is a sign of death is someone were to wear white or black at an Indian wedding.
