  3. What is Catatonic Schizophrenia? • Mental disorder • Symptoms mostly physical • People are sometimes unresponsive and immobile • Vary rigid, stiff, sometimes odd movements • Odd facial expressions • Mimic what others say

  4. What is Catatonic Schizophrenia? • Loss of contact with reality • Vary agitated • Some go into a Catatonic stupor: immobile, expressionless, coma-like state

Causes of Schizophrenia • Many kinds of Schizophrenia • Suspected of being caused by the same things • Psychoanalytic theory – caused by “Id” (controls instincts) overwhelming the “ego” (controls behaviors) • Over-demanding/emotional parents • Genetic factors • Birth complications • Brain abnormalities

  6. Effects of Catatonic Schizophrenia • Relationship problems • Disruption to normal activities • Retreatism -- rejecting society • High stress • Exhaustion • Poverty • Homelessness

  7. Risks Linked to Catatonic Schizophrenia • Suicide • Self-destructive behavior • Depression • Abuse of alcohol/drugs/prescription meds. • Victim/perpetrator of violent crime • Heart Disease • Other problems related to antipsychotic meds.

  9. How Common is Schizophrenia? • Less prevalent in developed countries • Migrants develop it more often • 7 – 8 people in every 1000 are affected • Compared to other disorders, chances are close to average
