Significance of plantain as a staple food crop • In sub-Saharan Africa: over 30 million people subsist on bananas as principal source of dietary carbohydrate. • Plantain: key component of food security in DRC (1.57 million t y-1) • 65% of the produced bananas are plantains. 1st Intern.   7. Collection area 1. 2005-2007 in 51 villages in P.O 2. Feb-Oct 2009, in 24 villages in Tshopo Oriental Province Tshopo district 3. 2009-2012, 189 villages in P.O., Equateur, Maniema, NK, SK, Katanga, Kasai and Bandundu Territories of DRC 1st Intern. Confer. on Biodiversity in the Congo Basin Kisangani,6th -10th June 2014

Plantain conservation in field collection • Established in 2 collections • The 1st, in 2005 with cvs collected in projects 1 and 2 • Hosts 67 different cultivars Field collection • The 2nd, in 2012 with cultivars collected in projects 1, 2 and 3 • Hosts about 87 different cultivars until now 2nd UNIKIS collection 1st Intern. Confer. on Biodiversity in the Congo Basin Kisangani,6th -10th June 2014

Conclusion • 97 CVs including 64 F, 23 F H and 10 H collected • P O, Equateur and Maniema were the most diversified because with more recorded synonyms • Conservation in field and in vitro initiated, • Collection missions in the other territories and villages not covered 1st Intern. Confer. on Biodiversity in the Congo Basin Kisangani,6th -10th June 2014
