  1. ANTOINE LAVOISIER Antoine Laurent Lavoisier was born on August 26, 1743. He was born into a wealthy family, being the son of a lawyer and his mother being the daughter of a wealthy family.

  2. Early Life • Lavoisier’s mother died when he was 5 years old, causing him to inherit her money. • Due to his family’s wealth, he easily paid for College des Quatre-Nations. • He studied chemistry, botany, astronomy, and mathematics. • He collaborated with Jean-Etienne Guettard and was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences.

  3. After College • Lavoisier married 13-year old Marie Anne PierrettePaulze when he was 28. • Marie Anne soon proved to be a scientific partner for her husband, Lavoisier. • He collaborated with Jean-Etienne Guettardto work on a geological survey on Alsace-Lorraine.

  4. Life as a Chemist • Lavoisier experimented with Pierre-Simon Laplace to conclude that respiration in mammals was the same as combustion of organic materials through the use of inhaled oxygen. • He discovered that Henry Cavendish’s “inflammable air” can be found in water/

  5. Stoichiometry • These experiments included one of Lavoisier’s quantitive chemical experiments. • He concluded that every element mixture has the same amount of elements from when it started. • His experiments proved the law of the conservation to be true

  6. Later Life as a Chemist • Lavoisier discovered that water is made from Hydrogen and Oxygen and that air is made from Nitrogen and Oxygen • Lavoisier published his first textbook called Education Treaties on Chemistry • Came up with the title for Hydrogen, meaning “water-former”

  7. Political Downfall • Became a tax collector at a young age • Becoming a tax collector made him a member of FermeGenerale, which lead many people to dislike him • Lavoisier was arrested because of people’s dislikes about him and his actions.

  8. Legacy • He came up with a system that is still used today. • He has made many contributions to science, including home and school • Lavoisier died on May 8, 1794 by guillotine
