Partner Share • Think about the sustenance the immigrant workers received as they worked to lay the ten miles of track. • What kinds of sustenance do you need to survive? • Immigrants coming to America often face adversity. What kinds of adversity did the immigrant workers face during Ten Mile Day?

  4. Concept Map • Let’s add the word sustenance under finding work on the concept map. • Let’s add the word adversity under missing their homeland on the concept map.

Amazing Words • Established-means set up on a lasting basis • How would you know if a routine has been established? • Homeland- the country that is your home or native land • Ian missed his homeland after his father’s job took the family to China. • Teach your partner what this amazing word means.

  12. Fluency With your partner pick a part of the story “Ten Mile Day” that you will practice reading. Don’t stop until I tell you to. Read aloud either together or one at a time. Make sure to use good pacing and correct voice inflection
