  2. Archaeology • The study of ancient peoples • Examining and studying material remains as large as buildings and as small as pottery shards.

  3. Archaeologist • A person who studies ancient things • They are like detectives, putting together clues from the past • They examine building, graves, bones, pottery and other artifacts

  4. Artifact • Any object that was made or used by humans • Reveal information about past human behaviour • Small items - pottery, stone, tools, bones with cut marks, coins • Large items – Pyramids, cities

  5. Hypothesis • A tentative and testable guess or premise • Archaeologist make and try to prove their hypothesis using artifacts

  6. Ecofact • Something that was ling at the time it was used by people • Bones - meat they ate • Grains of food in a basket - plants they grew • Clothing from animal skins – littlest piece of pollen on the clothing can tell a story

  7. Site • Anyplace archaeologists find to study • Found in many ways • Through written records, Radar, Satellites and more

  8. Strata • Layer of earth • Stratigraphy is the interpretation of these layers • Top = youngest items • Bottom = oldest items

  9. Grids • Division of an archaeological site into small squares • Used to measure and document the site • Help record the exact location of artifacts

  10. Tools • Trowels of different sizes • Shovels • Brushes (stiff, various sizes • Picks – dental picks • Soil sifter or shaker screen • Cameras, notebooks

  11. Fossils • The remains or imprint of plans and animals

  12. Casts • Made by pouring into moulds and hardening
