  2. Colonialism-A system by which a country maintains colonies outside its borders • Great Britain’s rule of American colonies • Berlin Conference-Series of meetings in Berlin, Germany held by European nations to decide how to divide Africa’s land • Sykes-Picot agreement

  3. Segregation- The practice of separating people of different races, classes, or ethnic groups, in schools, housing, and public or commercial facilities. • U.S. before Civil Rights Movement • Partition- To divide a country or nation into separate racial or political groups. • Creation of Israel

  4. Nationalism- Strong pride in one’s nation or ethnic group • Patriotism • Pan African Conferences- Meetings held based on the mission of all people of African descent working together for freedom from the Europeans. • Zionism

  5. Developed or Developing Nations • A country that has achieved a high degree of economic development (industrialization), and enjoys the higher standards of living which wealth and technology make possible. • Example: U.S. • A newly industrialized nation • China • Literacy Rate • Jobs in Industry and Service • GDP per Capita • Life Expectancy Developed Developing

  6. Apartheid- An official policy of racial separation formerly practiced in South Africa • Segregation • Civil War - right between opposing groups for control of a country’s government. • U.S. Civil War

  8. Nelson Mandela • Spent 26 years in prison for fighting Apartheid • Inspired the fight during his incarceration • Became president of African National Congress • Won Noble Prize • Became president of South Africa

  9. Jomo Kenyatta • Leader of Pan African Congress • Worked for African Independence • First president of a newly independent Kenya

  10. F.W. de Klerk • Helped appeal Apartheid laws • Released apartheid prisoners, including Mandela • Won Noble Peace Prize w/ Mandela for fighting Apartheid

  11. General Abubakar • Military ruler who was sworn into the role of president of Nigeria in June of 1998 after the unexpected death of the current president. • Chosen by military collogues, but he and his family were NOT happy about this position • A few days after being sworn in, he promised to hold elections and transfer his power to the elected president and he established Independent National Electoral Commission • Although efforts were made to ensure that the elections were free and fair, there were widespread irregularities that drew criticism from foreign observers. • New president was elected along with a new constitution.
