Answer Prove Directions such as “Puzzled”, “More puzzled still” and “She picks up her bag. Matthew does not move.” help the reader to see that Matthew is unsure about taking Anne home with him. Stage directions for Anne like “A moment of fear”, “…Anne’s voice trembles.” and “Anne clutches her bag. She is terrified.” show how badly Anne wants to be accepted and adopted by Matthew. Explain These aspects would be lost for the reader without the stage directions.
