  2. Birth & Death • De Soto was born about 1500,in Barcarrota Spain. • De Soto fell ill and died of a fever in 1542.

  3. De Soto’ s gold • One of the most famous gold seekers in history was De Soto. • De Soto was rich from Incan gold and wanted to colonize with North America

  4. De Soto led • De Soto led the first Europeans into America in 1540 at age 39. • His fleet of 9 ships carried supplies, pigs, horses, war dogs, and 600 conquistadors, accompanied by tailors, shoe makers, stocking makers, noties, trumpeters,friars, servants, slaves and two women.

  5. When De Soto sailed • When he was 19 he sailed to the new world with Pedrarias Davila, governor of Darien. • He be came a ruthless soldier whose men feared his temper but admired his horsemanship

  6. De Soto went to Florida • The Spaniards did not know the country north of Florida. • On May 30,1539 De Soto and his men went ashore at Tampa Bay in Florida.

  7. Mississippi River • De Soto first saw the Mississippi River at the present site of Memphis in spring of 1541, one year before his death. • De Soto forced the Indians to furnish supplies, killed their chiefs until they told them where gold was.

  8. What a failure • In the view of the Spanish Crown, De Soto’s expedition was a failure. • It resulted in no new settlements,and no riches were discovered.
