  3. Democracy -Rule by the masses/people -No Leader All Decisions made by the community -Created in ancient Athens -True Democracies only work in small groups

  4. Athenian Democracy Composed of three main institutions: -Assembly of Demos -Council of 500 -People’s Court

  5. Socrates What is the greatest good? Did not let individuals settle for an answer. Consistently questioned people to force them to think and speak up for their ideals.

  6. Plato Wrote “The Republic” Student of Socrates. Lost faith in Athenian Democracy due to Socrates execution. -Society should be divided into three classes: Philosopher Kings Soldiers Workers

  7. Aristotle Wrote “Politics” Student of Plato. Believed that man is naturally political and that tyranny is not a legitimate form of government. Constitutional Government

  9. Republic A republic is a form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to elect the leaders who make governmental decisions

  10. Twelve Tables of Laws -Roman laws were carved on 12 tablets and publicly displayed. -Why is the formation of a written law code necessary in a democratic government? -Established the idea that all free citizens had the right to protection of the laws and that the laws would be fair to all.
