  2. What is Biomass? • Biomass, as a renewable energy source, is biological material from living, or recently living organisms. As an energy source, biomass can either be used directly, or converted into other energy products such as biofuel • English translation: Organic matter that can be used for fuel (energy) • It is plant and animal material waste used for fuel

  3. How it works • Take any of these: grass, crop residue, manure, woody biomass(bark, sawdust) forest residue, and urban waste • Next step is the waste goes to a plant and goes into a combustion chamber

  4. How it works part 2 • Combustion: burn it and produce stem • Anaerobic Digestion: Micro-organisms break down biomass to produce methane and carbon dioxide • Energy Desisty- Woody Biomass waste is about 50% water, so transportation is costly due to weight

  5. biomass for energy can be harvested at unsustainable rates, damage ecosystems, produce harmful air pollution, consume large amounts of water, and produce net greenhouse emissions • However, most scientists believe there is a wide range of biomass resources that can be produced sustainably and with minimal harm, while reducing the overall impacts and risks of our current energy system Down Sides Against Environment

Economy History • $1.8 billion personal and corporate income and employed 66,000 workers • 14% of the world still utilizes biomass. • The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 17,000 jobs are generated for every million gallons of ethanol • Operations in Berlin are currently underway to create a plant • Employs 120 ppl • Pays 1.6$ in state taxes • “This agreement is good news for our state and our economy. It will not only continue to ensure more of our energy comes from renewable sources, but it will also directly save a number jobs across our state," Gov. Lynch said. "I applaud and thank everyone involved for working to make this agreement possible."

  10. My Opinion? • I believe that this energy source has potential, but from an environmental standpoint, it can be dangerous and costly • I believe it would benefit NH greatly
