American Progress – John Gast (1872) • A symbol of Manifest Destiny, the figure "Columbia,” a personification of the United States, moves across the land in advance of settlers, Leads civilization westward, stringing telegraph wire and holding a book. The different stages of economic activity of the pioneers are highlighted and, especially, the changing forms of transportation through industrialization. • Replacing darkness with light, and ignorance with civilization.
