Purpose of NVDRS • According to CDC, more than 50,000 people die from acts of violence, each year in the US. • Of those 50,000 deaths, 32,000 are suicides and 18,000 are homicides • In 2002, CDC implemented the National Violent Death Reporting System(NVDRS) • NVDRS collects risk factors on all deaths from violence, specifically suicides, homicides and unintentional firearm, legal intervention, terrorism and undetermined intent.

  3. NVDRS Implementation • By 2006, had 17 states: Alaska, California (3 sites) Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island ,South Carolina , Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. • California dropped out • In 2010 , added 2 more states: Michigan and Ohio
