  9. SISWeb Printing Dilemma • Existing infrastructure • Elixir for Xerox • develop forms overlays for system printers • ISRV(Delphi client on Windows only) • LPD prints overlays for local printers • Supports a limited number of forms • Client install on every PC • Form changes are made to both products • for student schedules, report cards, transcripts • VPS (Levi, Ray & Shoup) • Used to send line output via TCP/IP • PageCenter (Levi, Ray & Shoup) • Web served output

  10. SISWeb Printing Dilemma • Challenges • ISRV (an in-house product) • Developer retired; no more changes • Does not support MacIntosh PCs • We can suggest but not mandate • which PCs and printers our school districts use • Initial solution • Elixir for AFP • IBM PSF with ACIF • VPS/PCL converts AFP to PCL • PCL chosen because it has a smaller data stream, it is supported by all of the existing printers in the school districts, and it can be sent directly to the printer so it will work with Macs

  11. SISWeb Printing Dilemma • Problem • Debugging overlays very difficult with 3 vendors • Design Pro (includes Elixir for Xerox and AFP) • nasty GUI, lacking functionality, looses mapped field names when opened for update, WYSIWYG proofer and printed version not identical • Solution • Dialogue by Exstream • Much easier GUI, field definitions in dictionary easily reusable/shared • One vendor from development to output • Development environment - Windows based • Production - Runs on NT, UNIX, MVS, LINUX – we use MVS

  12. Dialogue – Why? • Inputs • print miner for legacy print image data • XML input – not using at this time • CSV input • Outputs • PCL • PDF
