Audience • 6th Graders • Students located at a gifted school • Students from upper class families living in an Urban area • For students who want to learn more about topics we have discussed in class. Also Quizzes to help them prepare for tests.

Environment • Power point is to be done as an individual. • This is to be done at a computer at home or in the classroom. (Use headphones in the classroom so you don’t disturb the other classmates.) • This is to be done in a place where learning can be done without being bothered by distractions.

Objective • After this activity students will be able to identify the 5 senses and be able to answer various questions on the subject matter. Students will also learn the basics of operating power point. • Students must score a 100% to be knowledgeable of the material.

Motivation • Interesting and fun facts to attract the learner into learning the desired material while having it be fun at the same time.

Orientation • It is important to learn the 5 senses because we are using them constantly! Lets learn more about them but make sure you are paying attention to the content because there will be a quiz at the end.

Hearing Info. • You hear with your ears. Sounds enter your ears through the pinna, which is the part of the ear that you can see. • The sound travels along the ear canal to the eardrum. • When sound hits the eardrum it makes it vibrate.

Hearing Info. • Vibrations pass from the eardrum along three tiny ear bones to a snail-shaped tube called the cochlea. • The vibrations make the cochlea move. • Then hair cells in the cochlea send signals to the brain.

Hearing Info. • Hearing helps us listen to music, people talking, and other sounds. • Cells in your ear send a message to your brain to tell you what the sound is.

Hearing Info. • Your ears can keep you safe. • You use them to listen for fire alarms or car horns when crossing the road.

Hearing Info.Why do we have two ears ? • We have two ears because the sounds hit one ear a fraction of a second before the other and produces stronger vibrations. • This helps you tell the direction the sound came from.

Hearing Info.How are your ears related to feeling dizzy? • If the vestibular organs are damaged or diseased, they send to many or too few impulses to the brain. The brain interprets these abnormal messages as an imbalance of the body. The person Then has a false feeling of motion or dizziness. This condition is called vertigo.

Taste Info. • You taste with your tongue. • The top of your tongue is covered with small bumps that we call taste buds. • Taste buds are made up of 50-100 taste cells. • Taste cells sense sweet, salty, or bitter tastes.

Taste Info.How it works • When you eat something, food dissolves in the saliva in your mouth. • Dissolved food enters a taste bud and tiny bits of food touch taste cells. • The taste cells sense tastes and then send the signals to the brain.

Taste Info. • Your sense of taste is important because it helps you choose and enjoy food. • Your tongue helps to keep you safe. It warns you when foods have gone bad so that you don’t eat them.

Taste Info.What disorders/diseases are associated with taste? • There are many tongue disorders. Lumps or ulcers on your tongue can be a problem for people of all ages. It is caused by a papillae disorder. When you have lumps or ulcers on your tongue, you can get tumors if they aren’t treated quickly. Glossitis and a geografical tongue are also caused by a papillae disorder.

Taste Info.What disorders/diseases are associated with taste? Cont’d • This affects all people and results in inflammation of the tongue. • It is caused by bacteria build up and leads to fungal infection and a dark colored tongue.

Sight Info. • You see with your eyes. • Light enters through the cornea. Then it passes through the pupil. • The pupil is the black opening in the colored part of the eye called the iris.

Sight Info. • The pupil changes size. • In dim light the pupil grows larger to let more light into the eye. • In bright light the pupil becomes smaller.

Sight Info. • Your sight helps you to understand your surroundings. • It lets you see an objects color, size, shape, movement, and distance.

Sight Info.Why do we have two eyes ? • We have two eyes because having two eyes increases your angle of vision. • It helps you to judge depth. • Having two eyes allows us to see 180 degrees and three dimensional objects.

Sight Info. • People who cannot see are called blind. • They often use a special dog to help them. This is called a seeing eye or guide dog. • Blind people use special writing called Brailleto read. They use their sense of touch for this.

Touch Info. • You touch and feel things with your skin. • Your skin has three layers. The upper layer is the epidermis, the middle layer is the dermis, and the bottom layer is a fatty layer. • The dermis has nerve endings to sense how things feel.

Touch Info. • The bottom, fatty layer protects the body from bumps. • When you touch something, nerve endings send signals along the nerves to your brain. (for example if you touch ice the message that goes to your brain is that it is cold.)

Smell Info. • Nerve cells send signals to a part of the brain called the olfactory bulb. • The olfactory bulb sends out a message to your brain to decide what smell it is and what you should do about it.

Smell Info. • When you smell something sweet and yummy your brain sends a message to your mouth to tell it to get ready to eat. • Your sense of smell is important because it helps you to enjoy the favour of food and drinks and the smell of flowers. • It keeps you safe too as you use it to smell smoke, warning you of danger.
