  2. Overall Aim of Course: • On successful completion of this subject students should be able to: • 1. Sets the context by defining attractions, • 2. looking at their role in tourism, • 3. examining the attraction product and market, and • 4. outlining the business environment of attractions

  3. Knowledge and Understanding: • On successful completion of this module the students will be able to: • Identify the principal types of visitor attraction, catering for both tourists and day visitors also the key attributes of each of these attractions;

  4. Intellectual Skills • . critically estimate the elements of the role that can be played by education in visitor attraction management and development; • . Estimate the techniques adopted to specifically manage and develop heritage attractions with specific emphasis on Egypt and Middle East countries .

  5. Intellectual Skills • . Explain how to employ consumer needs and demands in order to make development plans for various site attractions

  6. Professional Skills • On successful completion of this module the students will be able to: • c1. Exhibit the principal types of visitor attraction, catering for both tourists and day visitors also the key attributes of each of these attractions • c2. Incorporate the implications for the management of these attractions and their key attributes; • c3. develop appreciation of the relationship between the environment, its management and the demand for visits to attractions

The visitor attraction product. • • The economics of visitor attraction management. • • The planning and development of visitor attractions. • • Management processes and planning. • • Economy, efficiency and effectiveness. • • Presentation and interpretation. • • The management of heritage attractions. • • The management of large-scale attractions. • • The role of education in visitor attraction management

  8. Course Materials • Textbook: Swarbrooke, J (2002), The Development and Management of Visitor Attractions, Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann. • Handouts uploaded on the website • Schedule & Material: PUA Website (www.pua.edu.eg)

  9. Research Paper Each student will complete a 10-15 page, typed in font 12 Times New Roman, double-spaced research paper that examines in detail a topic directly related to the ecotourism. Each student must select a topic for his research paper and submit to the lecturer for approval. Each paper should be properly researched using secondary data sources (library, electronic etc.,) and be complete with proper citations and references.

  10. Oral Presentations Each student will be expected to discuss his research paper (e.g., topic, methodology, results, and conclusions) in a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation to the class. (see course outline for dates) www.pua.edu.eg

  11. Teaching Format • lecturing on the class, • Q&A, • group discussion, • presentations, • case study, • course report, • Extra creditopportunities is entirely optional.

  12. Examination • multiple choice, • true-false, • sentence completion, • listing, • short essay questions. • Quizzes will be unannounced

  13. Course Grading Two mid-semester evaluation 20 Class activities & Presentation 20 Attendance 10 Final written exam 50 Total 100

  14. Grading Polices • Missed exams: No student will be excused from taking an exam. No Make up exam unless there is prior permission from the lecturer or a written medical excuse. students are responsible for making up the test before the next class. • Late assignments: Assignments handed in after they are due will receive a maximum of half-credit. • Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPG): At least 10% of your grade will be based on (SPG).

  15. Make-up Work • When absence from class is necessary, students are responsible for all content that is covered, for announcements made in their absence, for making up all assignments. These assignments must be submitted within one week after return.

  16. Attendance • Absence (excused or unexcused) should not exceed 25% of classes. • Students exceeding 25% absence in a given course are denied from completing the course and receive a (DN) grade (0.00%) on their official transcripts.
