  8. What is Diagnostic Medical Sonography?

  9. Diagnostic Ultrasound • Utilizes very high frequency sound to produce images of anatomy and pathology • Employs the use of a probe that is placed on the body after applying a coupling gel • The Sonographer manipulates the probe in order to transmit sound to specific locations and receive reflections from within the body • Reflections are analyzed by an ultrasound unit and displayed on an LCD screen

  10. Sonographers provide images of areas inside a patient's body that allow physicians to interpret important medical information and diagnose disease

Ultrasound Safety • There is no ionizing radiation associated with Diagnostic Ultrasound • Ultrasound utilizes sound energy only • Although the possibility exists that biological effects may be identified in the future, current data indicate that the benefits for patients from prudent use of diagnostic Ultrasound outweigh the risks if any that may be present

  13. Grayscale Ultrasound displays anatomy and pathology in shades of gray from black (fluid) to bright white (bone) 3-d Ultrasound adds texture and shading effects to represent a three dimensional data set

  14. Color Flow Doppler Ultrasound shows pattern and direction of blood flow

  15. Spectral Doppler shows velocity of blood flow over time

  25. Sonographer Job Description and Requirements

  26. Essential Functions • Performs clinical assessment and Diagnostic Sonography examinations • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings (Sonography is a highly operator dependent modality) • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician usually by providing a Sonographer worksheet • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients during care

Physical Requirements • Strength sufficient to: lift turn or position some patients, push ultrasound equipment on wheels (machine can Weigh up to 300 pounds or more) and move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers • Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions and wrist flexure necessary for scanning • Possess manual dexterity that is adequate to manipulate and operate all Sonography equipment • Possess visual skills necessary to adequately differentiate between subtle shades of gray and make color distinctions

Important Skills and Attributes • Desire to provide respectful, compassionate, and consistently excellent patient care • Extensive knowledge of Anatomy and Pathology • Good hand –eye coordination and spatial orientation • Comprehensive knowledge of Ultrasound Physics and instrumentation • Detail oriented work ethic

Qualifications • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required • The Broward College Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited by CAAHEP through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS)

Required Licenses/Certifications • Active certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in specialty(ies) as appropriate • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements set forth by the ARDMS ( currently 30 CME’s per rolling triennium)

ARDMS Registries and Specialties • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) with specialties offered in Abdomen, Ob/Gyn, Musculoskeletal Pediatrics and Breast • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) with specialties offered in Adult, Pediatric and Fetal Echocardiography • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

  32. Sonographers can provide their services at: • Hospitals • Outpatient clinics • Physician's offices • Research facilities • Or may become: • Independent contractors • Application or Sales specialists for equipment manufacturers • Educators or consultants

Employment Outlook • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , employment of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is expected to grow by 23 percent between 2016 and 2026 • This percentage is much faster than the average for all occupations • As ultrasound technology evolves, it will become a more common method used to assist in diagnosing medical conditions, favored over more invasive procedures

  36. Courses to Be Completed Before Making Application to The Sonography Program

  37. Specialized Sonography courses begin in June • The DMS Associate in Science Degree is awarded upon completion of the two year course of study • Graduates are eligible to sit for the ARDMS Registries in Abdomen, Ob/Gyn and Adult Echocardiography

  38. All students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for admission • Admission is based on a point qualification system (there is no waiting list) • Once accepted: • Physical examination is required including immunizations • Student must complete certifications in areas such as CPR, TB/OSHA, etc. • Background checks and drug screening are also required
