  1. Food RescuePROGRAM Don’t Throw Away Your Chance to Help!

  2. What isFoodRescue? • Founded in 1984, Food Rescue, or 12 Baskets, is Second Harvest Heartland’s prepared and perishable food rescue program.

  3. Food Waste in Minnesota • An estimated 112,131 tons of unused food is wasted annually in Minnesota.

  4. Who Are Our Donors? • Food is recovered from more than 200 donors and delivered to more than 70 social service agencies.

  5. The Bill Emerson Good SamaritanDonations Act • Encourages businesses to donate food and grocery products to non-profit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. • Federal law that protects companies from civil and criminal liability if the product donated in good faith later causes harm to the recipient.

  6. SECOND HARVEST FLEET Food Rescue operates 5 refrigerated trucks8 hours a day, 5 days a week throughout the Twin Cities’ metro area

  7. SECOND HARVESTGoals and Objectives • Increase high quality donations • Increase # of receiving agencies • Manage a fiscally responsible program • Increase support • Decrease cost to agencies • Continue to enhance program visibility

  8. CUB AND SECOND HARVEST • Cub continues to work close with Second Harvest • Cub is always looking to help the less fortunate in communities we serve • Reduce waste sent to land fills which supports environmental programs

  9. WILL IT WORK? • Since fall 07 program tested in 3 stores -Apple Valley -Eagan -Rosemount • Response has been overwhelming to proceed to all stores • Requires 2 to 3 additional hrs per week • No disruption to operations to manage program

  10. PRODUCT HOLDINGAREA • Store to designate 2 areas for products - Produce cooler - Freezer • Location toward front for easy access

  11. SECOND HARVEST SIGN • Second Harvest will supply 2 signs • Placement on rack or area to designate product for pickup

  12. REQUIRED BOX/STICKER • Only Apple/Orange or other Citrus boxes are to used • Each box is to be marked with our current orange pallet stickers with S/H on sticker

  13. PROCESS Dept. is walked & product separated for trash or Second Harvest

  14. FRESH/PACKAGED MEAT AND DELI Mark thru UPC • Fresh meat product removed will be placed in separate boxes to prevent cross contamination (Beef/Pork/Poultry) • All packaged product can be placed in same box (Cryovac meats/cheeses)

  15. PRODUCT NOT INCLUDED • Re workable items • Items receiving credit • Items returned to reclaim center • Discontinued/marked downs that can be sold • Vendor items unless approved by vendor & validated by Store Director/ASD/MOD/Receiver • Bakery products already picked up by local charities

PRODUCE(DESIGNATEDCOOLER) Out of date -bagged salads -fruit/veggie trays -bagged fruit/veg. -salad dressings Any bruised citrus/squash/potatoes other fruit & other items not meeting quality standards No spoiled/moldy products MEAT(DESIGNATEDFREEZER) Out of date -lunchmeat/package & process meats -fresh beef/pork/poultry No seafood included No spoiled/moldy product All items removed MUST remain in present packaging AUTHORIZED ITEMS

DELI(DESIGNATED COOLER) Out of date -Pre packaged salads -Packaged cheeses -Packaged meats -Breads/Crackers Only Packaged/Sealed product in original package No open or items prepared by associates such as pizza/salads/sandwiches DAIRY (DESIGNATED COOLER) Out of date -Cheeses -Tortillas -Puddings/Cookie Dough -Yogurt Only product in original packaging AUTHORIZED ITEMS

AUTHORIZED ITEMS GROCERY (DESIGNATED COOLER) • Dented cans ( non returnable to reclaim) • Torn packages contents still sealed in inner package -Cereals/cake mixes for example • Product missing labels but sealed in original package • Vendor items approved by vendor but only after checked by receiver & credit is given

  19. PICKUP PROCESS • Pickup will be 2 or 3 days each week based on store volume • Time between 9am &1pm • Driver will check in with receiver • Store Director/ASD/MOD will be called to review boxes for pickup • Store Director/ASD/MOD must validate items so they comply with attached procedures • Driver will leave a pickup slip with receiver/Store Director/ASD/MOD as to total boxes removed

  20. SUMMARY • Example tonnage report e mailed to Store Director/Merchandise Directors/DMs weekly -Report shows total lbs picked up for the week • Report should be used as a tool to compare like store returns • Report used to review production overages/shortfalls to grow sales/reduce shrink/improve GP • Help reduce costs in trash pickups • Cub Foods Total Poundage • Apple Valley • Meat 8580 • Produce 5120 • Dry 1050 • Deli 0 • Eagan • Meat 10105 • Produce 2410 • Dry 3780 • Deli 95 • Grand Total 31140
