  6. Grade information SEMESTERCLASS: ½ CREDIT FULL YEAR CLASS: 1 CREDIT Grade Classification: 9th Grade: 4.5 or less 10th Grade: 5.0 – 9.5 11th Grade: 10.0 – 14.5 12th Grade: 15.0 or more • A 90 – 100 • B 80 – 89 • C 75 – 79 • D 70 – 74 • F 0 - 69

  7. Semester Grades • Minor grades and major grades will be recorded as numbers in the grade book. Six weeks and semester grades will also be averaged and recorded on the report card numerically.Example: 80% 20%

  8. HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS High school credits for students in grades 9-12 are awarded on a semester by semester basis. If a student fails the first semester of a full-year course and passes the second semester, the two semester grades will be averaged to determine whether the student has earned a passing grade for the year.Example: 65 (1st semester) + 75 (2nd semester) = 70 avg. Credit will be awarded for both semesters.

  9. HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS CONT’D However, if a student passes the first semester of a full-year course, but fails the second semester, the second semester grade cannot be averaged. The student must repeat the second semester of the course for the four core classes and foreign language only.Example: 80 (1st semester) + 60 (2nd semester) = 70 Avg Second semester credit will not be awarded.

  10. Exemption policy semester exams Grade 9 = 2 Exemptions per Semester • No more than three absences in the class • Grade of 80 or above in the class in which they are requesting exemption • No more than three office referrals • No suspension, ISS or ALC assignment • No fines or unpaid fees

Class rank • Class Rank is based on the cumulative grade point average for grades 9-12. • A student’s GPA is derived by dividing the total number of grade points by the number of semester courses attempted. • Class rank will first be determined by February of the Freshman year and will be updated after each subsequent semester.

Attendance Policies • Compulsory Attendance Law • Student ages 6 – 18 are required to attend school. • 90% Rule • A student must attend at least 90% of the days the class is offered in order to receive credit. • Doctor’s Note Required • After 5 consecutive absences or • A total of 8 days in six-month period.

Attendance • What are school hours? • Our school hours begin at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m. • When my child get sick, do I need to call in? • GRHS appreciates you notifying us if you are going to miss school due to being ill. We can ensure your attendance is marked correctly. Please call 832-223-4204 and inform GRHS attendance, Mrs. Torres, that your child will not be in attendance due to illness. • Do I need a note? • Yes, notes are required explaining any absence. Even if you pick up your child from school, a note is required when your child returns to school. A parent note will suffice if the illness doesn’t warrant a visit to the doctor. If your child sees a doctor, please bring the original “Return to School” note. • If your child is late to school, they must sign in at the attendance office prior to entering first period. If they are more than 15 minutes late to class or misses more than 15 minutes of the last half of class, they are counted absent and will need a note.

  17. Attendance (cont’d) • If the school nurse sends your child home, is it an absence? • Yes. The school nurse rarely “sends” a student home ill. The nurse will always notify a parent in the event a student becomes sick at school. If the nurse determines the student is running a fever or has a condition that is contagious, she will request that you be picked up. • Can someone other than the parent pick up your child? • We will not release students to anyone other than those on the contact list. We do not accept notes or phone calls requesting us to do so. If an older brother/sister wants to pick up your child, the brother or sister needs to be at least 18 years old and on the contact list. • If you want to update the list ,you need to visit the Registrar’s office in person. • What if your child is out for an extended illness or extenuating circumstances? • You may “Appeal” the absences for medical reasons or certain extenuating circumstances. You will need original medical notes for back-up. Please contact your AP for additional information. • What if your child forgets a note? • They have TEN school days to bring notes in to the attendance office. • Faxed copies are accepted if they are faxed by the doctor/dentist office. If you need to keep the original document for any reason, present the original to us and we will make the copy for our files.

  18. hOMEWORK • Expect your child to have homework every night. • BE CONCERNED – No books, no homework, no assignments, no tests to study for, etc. • Monitor study time • E-mail teachers • Check teacher websites • Call the teacher if you have questions • Check parent portal and online grades

TOP 10% RULE Students ranking in the top *10% of their graduating class must be admitted to the Texas public college or university of their choice if they: Apply no later than two years after graduation from a Texas High School and… Submit a completed application before the expiration of any filing deadline established by the college. * University of Texas is top 8% and this is subject to change

SERVICE CORD… • Hours required are an average of 40 per year that the student is enrolled at George Ranch High School. • Class of 2013 (Juniors only ) need 120 hours by graduation • Class of 2014 and 2015 need 160 hours by graduation • Service Cord starts on the First Day of school freshman year • The following MAY count toward service hours: • Volunteer duties associated with a church or other community oriented non-profit organization • Boy Scout/Girl Scout service hours • Rosenberg/Richmond/Sugarland etc revitalization • Highway cleanup • Blood drives (including giving blood = 1 hour of service) • Structured tutoring (such as adult education, literacy programs, citizenship programs, etc) • All community service hours honored by PAL’s, National Honor Society, Student Council, etc. may also be submitted for consideration for Service Cord Hours.
