LONG DIVISION PowerPoint By Natalie Roland
THE PROBLEM • First you pick a dividend, then a divisor • Make sure to start small then work your way up • The dividend is the number inside the bracket • The divisor is the number outside the bracket
Working The Problem • See how many times the divisor can go into the first number of the dividend • if it can’t go into the first number then make the second number in the dividend the number in the ones place • For instance, since 3 can’t go into 2 if the number 4 is to the right of the two it would become 24
Subtraction • When you find out how many times your divisor goes into a number put it above that number • Put what it equals underneath that number and subtract • Whatever the answer is see if the divisor can go into that number (unless if the number is zero)
Bringing Down Numbers • Now if your divisor can’t go into the answer you got from your subtraction problem, then bring down the next number in the dividend like this
Remainders • Now when you are subtracting on the last digit in the dividend, if your divisor cannot go into that it is called a remainder • When you have a remainder you make a capital r and then your remainder near the problem like this
Dead Monkeys Smell Bad • To do long division you need to know what that means • D,divide • M,multiply • S,subtract • B,bring down
