Myths & Stereotypes • Women who work in non-traditional careers are not feminine. • Men who work in non-traditional careers are not masculine. • Certain jobs are “men’s work” and other jobs are “women’s work”. • Women are not strong enough to perform in trade or construction jobs. • Men are not nurturing enough to work with small children. • Men or women who work in non-traditional careers earn less than others employed in traditional occupations.

Men who choose non-traditional careers are not strong enough or skilled enough to perform traditionally male careers. • Females do not have a strong aptitude for math and science and therefore, won’t perform well in associated careers. • Women and men are represented equally in most occupations. • Women will leave employment to get married and have children; therefore, the best jobs should go to males. • Women on a job site make it difficult for men to concentrate.

  5. Disadvantages • Hazardous workplace (women). • Discrimination/Har-assment. • Sense of isolation. • Non-supportive friends and family. • Physical requirements. • Shift work vs. traditional schedule. • Seasonal lay-offs. • Lack of mentors. • Potential for mental and physical challenges.
