The Safety Orientation • WSU Vancouver Conducts Safety Orientations for: • New Hires & Re-Hires (Full-Time, Part-Time & Temporary): • 1st Day of Work • Existing Employees and Transfers: • Every 2 Years, or When New Job Responsibilities are Assigned • The Orientation Provides an Opportunity to Review/Discuss: • Emergency Actions, Roles and Evacuation Routes • Location of Emergency Equipment and First Aid Supplies • Existing & New Workplace Hazards and Safe Work Procedures • Employee Safety Concerns

The Safety Orientation • Identification of Workplace Hazards for New Hires to Help Prevent Accidents and Injuries • Hazards Associated with Equipment, Processes & Materials • Promotion of a Safe Work Ethic with New Employees • Statistics Show That New Employees Are at a Higher Risk for Accidents and Injuries - The Safety Orientation Reduces This Risk • Increase in Safety Awareness • Safety Orientations are Required by Law

  5. TheSafety Orientation Checklist The Safety Orientation Checklist is Designed to Help Departments: • Delineate Important Subjects for Which All Campus Personnel Should Have Knowledge • Meet the Regulatory Requirement for the Documentation of the Safety Orientation

Potential Job Hazards It is the Supervisor’s Job to: • Identify Potential Job Hazards • Develop Procedures for Employees to Safely Perform Their Work and Mitigate Hazards • Transfer the Knowledge • Train Employees to Identify Hazards, Protect Themselves and Work Safely • Safety Orientation is the First Step in This Process • Supervise Employees to Ensure They Work Safely

Potential Job Hazards • Supervisors/Designees Should Develop a List of Hazards in Their Work Area and Attach to the Safety Orientation Checklist • Hazardous Equipment, Processes & Materials • How to Mitigate Hazards • Use This List During the Employee Safety Orientation • The Campus Has Many Different Jobs, Some With More Risk of Injury Than Others, e.g., Science Employees Will Have More Potential Hazards Than the Library Employees

Potential Job Hazards It is the Employee’s Job to: • Follow Established Work Procedures • Be Aware of Workplace Hazards • Work Safely to Protect Self and Co-Workers • Report Unsafe Conditions or Accidents/Incidents to Your Supervisor • Use Engineering Controls and Wear Protective Equipment Provided

Reporting Incidents • Emergencies: • Call 911 • All Injuries: • Report to Supervisor • Complete Online Incident Report (Within 24 hrs) • Serious Injuries or Death: • Report to Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations • Notification to WSU Pullman Made by Vice Chancellor • Near Misses: • Email closecalls@vancouver.wsu.edu • EH&S Website http://admin.vancouver.wsu.edu/ehs/environmental-health-safety

Reporting Incidents • Injured Employee Completes Form S25-20-8, Incident Report Form, Within 24 hrs • Electronic Form Available at: http://admin.vancouver.wsu.edu/ehs/environmental-health-safety • Supervisor Completes Report in Absence of Employee • Supervisor and EH&S Automatically Receive Electronic Copies • Public Safety Completes Accident Reports for Students and Visitors - Send Injured Party to the Public Safety Office • Form S25-20-8 is Also Used for Property Damage and Workplace Violation Reporting

Why Report Incidents? • To Initiate Corrective and/or Preventative Actions in Order to Minimize/Avoid Further Incidents • To Process Employee Benefits (if Necessary) • To Forecast Future Safety-Related Budget Needs • To Comply with Existing Laws and Regulations Regarding Accidents/Injuries Which Result in Lost Work Time and/or Job Restrictions

Emergencies - Campus Equipment • Blue-Light Phones in Parking Lots • Phones in Hallways of Each Floor – All Buildings • Fire Pulls in Hallways • Fire Sprinklers in All Buildings • Fire Extinguishers in Hallways and Labs • Emergency Showers & Eyewashes in VCLS, VSCI, VMMC, VECS Labs, Hallways & Darkrooms • Evacuation Stair Chairs • AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) in Buildings • First Aid Kits • Our First Aid Kit(s) is Located: ___________________ • Public Safety Also Has First Aid Kit and AED

Emergencies - Preparations • CPR/First Aid/AED Training is Offered Through Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) • At Least Once per Quarter • Additional Classes Depending Upon Resource Availability • Call x69706 to Sign-up for a Class • Know the Location of the First Aid Kit(s) and Other Emergency Equipment in the Area(s) in Which You Work and Teach • First Aid Kits are Located Across Campus; They are Purchased/Stocked by Each Department

Emergencies - Preparations • Know: • What to Do in an Emergency • Evacuation Routes and Evacuation Areas • Emergency Equipment Locations • How to Use Emergency Equipment • Be Prepared for Emergencies at Home: • Food, Water, Flashlights and Prescription Medications on Hand • Out-of-State Emergency Number for Family Check-In

Emergencies – Calling 911 • For All Emergency Response Needs, Call 911 • Stay Calm and Provide 911 Dispatcher with Your Name, Location and Nature of the Problem • Stay on the Line Until Help Arrives • The 911 Dispatcher will Notify Public Safety, who Notifies Other Necessary Campus Response Personnel • Call 911 Direct from any Phone on Campus, Including Pay Phones or Cell Phones

Emergencies - Medical • Call 911, if Patient is Non-Responsive • Don’t Move a Patient Unless it’s Necessary • If Patient is Awake, Ask if He or She Wants Assistance • If Trained, Provide First Aid (Only to the Level Trained) • If Not Trained, Know Who is and Seek Aid • Keep On-Lookers Away from the Patient • Direct Emergency Personnel to Patient

Emergencies - Fire • Leave Your Area - Shut the Door and Exit the Building • Pull the Fire Alarm on the Way Out of Building • Alert Others on Your Way Out • Do Not Use Elevators • Evacuate to Your Building’s Assigned Evacuation Area • Do not Re-Enter a Building Until Public Safety Authorizes You to do so

Emergencies – Fire • When Using a Fire Extinguisher, Remember “PASS” • Pull the Safety Pin • Aim Nozzle at the Base of the Flames • Squeeze the Handle • Sweep the Extinguisher Back and Forth Across the Fire Until the Fire is Extinguished • Do not Attempt to Put out a Fire Unless you Have Been Trained to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Emergencies - Evacuations • Each Building Has an Assigned Evacuation Area • Evacuation Maps are Posted in Each Classroom and Office Area and are Available from Public Safety • Construction may Temporarily Change an Evacuation Area; Check with Public Safety • If You Work in More Than One Building, Know the Evacuation Area and Emergency Equipment Locations for Each Building • Evacuate Buildings in a Calm and Orderly Manner • Do not Re-Enter Buildings Until Public Safety Authorizes Activity • My Building Evacuation Area is: _____________

Emergencies - Evacuations • Personnel From: • VCLS, VDEN and VMCB - Meet Adjacent to the Orange 1 Lot, Below the Amphitheater • VMMC, VUB and VLIB - Meet in the Grass Area Adjacent to the South Orange 3 Lot • VSCI, VFSC and VSSC - Meet at the Southeast Portion of the Orange 2 Parking Lot • VCCW (1st & 2nd Floors) - Meet in the Grass North of the Building and East of the Green 2 Lot Extension • VCCW (Ground Floor) and VECS (1st, 2nd & 3rd Floors) – Meet in the Grass Area East of the Mt. St. Helens Corridor • VECS (Ground Floor), VPP and VFO Meet in the Grass Area Near the Lot East of Facilities Operations • The Annex - Meet in the Grass West of the Cul-de-sac • Keep People/Vehicles Clear of Responding Emergency Personnel

Emergencies - Safety Zone Supervisors (SZSs) • Each Floor of Each Building Has a Primary & Alternate SZS • SZSs are Trained to Assist with the Orderly and Safe Evacuation of Buildings • SZSs Briefly Check Unlocked Areas, Shut Doors and Windows, and Assist the Disabled on the Way Out of the Building and to the Designated Evacuation Areas • SZSs Report Observations to the Incident Commander
