STANZA • The lines that are arranged into groups in a poem (similar to a paragraph)
TRADITIONAL/STRUCTURED POEMS • Poems that follow fixed rules (e.g. a certain number of lines; a repeating pattern of rhyme or rhythm)
FREE VERSE POEMS • Poems that do NOT follow set rules
SPEAKER • The voice in a poem that talks to the reader (the speaker may or may not be the poet)
SOUND DEVICES • Techniques that give poems a musical quality but can also create a mood & emphasize important words or ideas
RHYME • The repetition of sounds at the end of words
RHYTHM • The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line
METER • A repeating pattern of rhythm within a poem
REPETITION • The use of a word, phrase, or line more than once
IMAGERY • Language that appeals to the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE • The use of creative comparisons to help readers picture ordinary things in new ways
