  1. Triangle Association for the Science of Creation TASC May 1, 2011 Grace Church Text Questions: 919-539-4259

  2. TASC Mission Statement The mission of TASC is to increase awareness of the scientific evidence supporting the literal Biblical account of creation and refuting evolution in order to rebuild and strengthen the foundation of the Christian faith.

  3. Today’s Panel • Everett Coates, BS, Geology • Fred Johnson, Ph.D., Pathology • Phil Johnson, MCE, Christian Education • Henry Middleton, Ph.D., Systematic Theology • Dan Reynolds, Ph.D., Organic Chemistry • Joe Spears, MSEE, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Programming Instructor • Javier Valdivieso, BS, Mechanical Engineering

  4. We [the scientific establishment] take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counterintuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door.... —Richard Lewontin, 1997

  5. “Contrary to the outdated image of the scientific enterprise as a search for and collection of facts, the realization that many non-empirical factors are involved in determining scientific positions and in the adoption of scientific theories leads to the notion of theoretical and philosophical decision, or commitment. Research into the origin of life and the search for extraterrestrial life are a clear case in point, because here the weight of the philosophical commitment is much greater than in more conventional scientific fields. As long as no empirical evidence of life beyond Earth has been found, and as long as no scientific theory has succeeded in providing a fully convincing account of the emergence of life on Earth, the adoption of an evolutionary point of view toward the question of life's origin and the rejection of the idea of purposeful design involve a very strong philosophical commitment.” Fry, Iris The Emergence of Life on Earth, Rutgers University Press (2000), 283

  6. “People need to be aware that there is a range of models that could explain the observations.” Ellis Argues, “For instance, I can construct you a spherically symmetrical universe with earth at its center, and you cannot disprove it based on observations.” Ellis has published a paper on this. “You can only exclude it on philosophical grounds. In my view there is absolutely nothing wrong in that. What I want to bring into the open is the fact that we are using philosophical criteria in choosing our models. A lot of cosmology tries to hide that.” -George Francis Rayner Ellis in 1995 co-authored The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time with University of Cambridge physicist Stephen Hawking, published in 1973, and is considered one of the world's leading theorists in cosmology

  7. Epistemology • Revelation • Reason • Empiricism • Eyewitness Testimony

  8. Creation and Scripture • Bible is the Word of God, not of man • Scriptures are inerrant • Canon is closed • Perspicuity • Compare scripture with scripture • Interpretation must fit into the rest of scripture • Examine grammar/type of literature • Look at how a passage was viewed historically • Scripture authoritative where it has spoken clearly; other explanations must conform to it.

  9. All scripture is given by inspiration of God (Theopneustos = “God Breathed”), and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Tim 3:16 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24: 25-27

  10. Isaiah 53:4-9 (KJV) Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

  11. 1. Silent before accusers Matt 27:13-14 (KJV) Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. Luke 23:8-9 (KJV) And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

  12. 2. Taken from prison and judgement Matt 27:15-17 (KJV) Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 3. Made a grave with the wicked Mark 15:27 (KJV) And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

  13. 4. … with the rich in his death Matt 27:57-60 (KJV) When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Josephhad taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

  14. Now, not surprisingly, skeptics have long said that the book of Isaiah must have been written after the death of Jesus because they cannot accept the supernatural. Interestingly, C14 dating of the Isaiah scroll found at Qumran using accelerator mass spectrometry gave a date of 202-107 B.C. This date was corroborated by dates assigned using paleographical (335-327 B.C.) and internal (125-100 B.C.) criteria. This application of C14 dating is well within its useful range because C14 has a half-life of about 6000 years and the amount of C14 in the atmosphere 2000 years ago can be determined through calibration. These results provide strong scientific evidence for the supernatural origin of the scriptures. VanderKam, James C. The Dead Sea Scrolls Today (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1994), p. 19.

  15. Mt 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Lu 17:26-27 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. (Jesus referring to Gen 1:27) Luke 17: 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

  16. Creation and Scripture • New Testament writers and Jesus believed in the characters and lives of Adam, Noah, Jonah, and Lot as described in Genesis • Scripture is “God breathed” • The book of Genesis was considered scripture by Jesus, as were the “law and prophets”. • Word order and verb content in Genesis 1 consistent with narrative. • Fulfilled prophecies validates supernatural origin of scriptures • Jesus participated in and was an eyewitness of the creation of the earth and universe. • God wrote Genesis through Moses • Most consistent interpretation of Genesis 1 in light of its narrative character, comparison with other scripture, and history is the young earth creation position

  17. Young Earth Creation • God created the universe in 6 normal 24 hour days 6-10 thousand years ago. • The sequence of events in Gen 1 are historical and unlike evolutionary scenarios. • Language used in Gen 1 indicates 24 hour days. • Physical and spiritual death came after the Fall. Man and animals start as vegetarians. • Bible writers treat Gen 1 as historical and consider the creation as recent. • Noah’s Flood was global not local. • Radiometric dating and facts of astronomy consistent with a recent creation. • God created animals after their kind. • Microevolution within kinds accounts for modern fauna and flora. No natural mechanism for abiogenesis or macroevolution.

  18. Current Scientific Consensus vs Plain Reading of God’s Word Option 1:Trust God at His Word: Interpret science by scripture (sola scriptura). OR Option 2: Put theories of science (man’s philosophy) on an equal or better footing with scripture. View Genesis as allegorical or symbolic. May lead to compromise, confusion, and doubt. Philosophy: constantly changing Scripture: certain and unchanging

  19. Science and Young Earth Creation • Origin of the Universe: thermodynamics, physics, astronomy, antimatter , M-theory, many worlds • Origin of Life: DNA, information, RNA world, monomer synthesis, origin of chirality, deep sea vents, prebiotic soup, Miller Urey experiment, probabilities • Problems for Macroevolution: Cambrian explosion, information in DNA and proteins, junk DNA, irreducible complexity, peppered moths, etc • Global Flood: radiocarbon in fossil record, fossil graveyards, polystrate fossils, polonium radiohalos • Young Earth: radiometric dating, catastrophism, plate tectonics, Mt. St. Helens, polonium radiohalos, soft dinosaur tissue, C14 in diamonds
