  2. Formative Assessment • Results from formative assessments can provide immediate feedback to BOTH teachers and students regarding current levels of student understanding. These same results provide teachers with feedback regarding the effectiveness of instruction and how to better meet learning needs of students. Feed back needs to be FREQUENT , SPECIFIC AND ACCURATE. • The greatest impact on student achievement is formative assessment!

Classroom Formative • These assessments are generally referred to as “pretests” or “pre-assessments.” • Formative assessment can ALSO be used to gauge student progress during instruction and then after the conclusion of a lesson • Formative assessment is not graded, it is used to “drive” or inform instruction

  4. What does Formative Assessment look like? • Pre-tests • Post –it-notes • KWL charts • Question and answer • Quick Write • Story Retell

  5. Why use formative assessment? • Clarity of instruction • Help teachers to understand and determine student comprehension before instruction of a unit of study • To set teacher goals • Plan ways to differentiate instruction for the success of all students

  6. What is summative assessment? • Summative assessment provides a final measure for determining if learning goals have ben met • Summative assessment can occur at the end of a chapter, unit, quarter, semester or school academic year • The serve as assessments of learning

  7. Data driven instruction • 5 steps • Charting of student performance data • Analyzing the data • Setting goals for improvement • Selecting specific teaching strategies to meet goals • Determine results to gauge the effectiveness of the selected teaching strategies.

  10. FINAL THOUGHTS Assessment is a demand for student performance that provides evidence from which teachers can draw meaningful inferences about students’ knowledge and skills.
