2. What is assessment? Dictionary definition: a judgment about something based on an understanding of the situation What do you think of when you here the word assessment?

3. Summative • Summative assessments are cumulative evaluations • Used to measure student growth after instruction • Given at end of course to determine whether long-term learning goals have been met • When we hear assessment, we think of: • Unit/Chapter Tests • State Testing • WKCE • Act/SAT

4. Formative • What is formative assessment? • Formal and Informal assessment • Used during learning process • Gives the teacher instant feed back • Suggested you have at least one in every lesson taught • Helps you know content to touch on in future lessons

Activity • Split into groups • Each group is a family moving out west • Each family is looking for a place for the community to settle • Pick a place to form a settlement based on the land shown on the following slide • Each family needs one spokesperson to defend the settlement placement • List your reasons for settling there • Ex. Water, Lumber, Protection • We will then vote on where to start the settlement
