Definitions: • Pollutants are substances in an environment that are harmful or could become harmful to people or other living things. • Contaminants are substances that occurs in concentrations that are higher than would be expected. Pollutants are categorized into air pollutants, water pollutants and land pollutants.
They’re gonnagetcha! • Pollutants are not only a threat to our ecosystem but also pose a great health hazard to human beings. • Pollutants can enter the body of an organism ion one of three ways: • Inhaled (via the respiratory system) • Ingested (via the digestive system) • Contact with skin or other external organs.
Ingestion • Pollutants are sprayed on growing crops (ie. Insecticides, pesticides, herbicides) • Chemical or biological pollutants in water (ie. Ecoli, Coli Form bacteria, pesticides, gas, oil, etc.) • High concentrations of chemicals found in meat products caused by bioaccumulation. • GMO – Genetically Modified Food • Steroids found in meat products • Preservatives • Artificial flavours and colours in food. • Chemically altered food (refined sugars, bleached flour, pasteurized milk, etc.) • Drugs (recreational, prescription and other) • Plastics (BPA)
