  1. MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE BIODEGRADATION, COMPACTION AND WATER HOLDING CAPACITY. RAJENDRA .D. VAIDYA

  2. Thank You Dr. Dough Goldsmith (committee member) Dr. Clifford Randall (committee member) Dr. Gary Hater (WMI)

  3. ABSTRACT • Waste characterization parameters. • Solid waste field capacity study. • Development of laboratory methodology. • Results and interpretation. • Conclusion and recommendations.

  4. In Virginia for year 2001, 82.3% - 15,823,785 tons - was landfilled.Landfill capacity for MSW - 18.3 years

  5. Aspects of waste characterization

  6. Waste Properties

  7. Waste Properties

  8. Field Capacity • Compaction to desired density Landfills - 2000 lbs/yd3 • Compressed air – 40 psi • Dynamic compaction 500 ft-lbs • Static compaction 75- 40 lbs 3-5 days

  9. Methodology • Waste available 8-14 lbs wet • Volume fits in bucket sized 30.5 cm dia, 52 cm height • 40 psi – 1psi = 1255 lbs/yd2 • 500 ft-lbs, 1 ft from initial surface • 75-40 lbs static (775-443 lbs/yd2)

  10. Field Capacity- Compressed Air

  11. ln(S/t) = -(a + b ln t)

  12. Summary and Conclusion • Independency of final moisture on the initial moisture. • Reproducibility of method to yield the same moisture retention value (1-2 % range) for repeated runs with different initial moistures.(at 95 % ) • Field Capacity correlates with Cellulose • Hyperbolic model best fit, least variability

  13. Recommendations • Statistical validation of lab test • Calibration of Field Capacity and Hyperbolic model • Usage to best fit various landfill sites

  14. THANK YOU
