  2. 1. STRAIT - Narrow body of water – connects 2 larger bodies of water. 2. ISTHMUS - Narrow strip of land – connects 2 larger land masses.

  3. 3. LAKE - Large body of FRESH water surrounded by land. 4. RIVER - Large body of flowing FRESH water.

  4. 5. GULF - Large body of SALT water with land on 3 sides. Larger than a bay. 6. BAY - Body of SALT water part. enclosed by land. Smaller than a gulf.

  5. Large body of SALT water, smaller than an ocean. (“Salt water Lake” ex: Dead Sea) 7. SEA - 8. OCEAN – 4 largest bodies of SALT water.

  6. 9. DELTA - Triangle shaped land at a river’s mouth. 10. TRIBUTARY - Smaller body of water which feeds into a larger one.

  7. 11. ISLAND - Land with water on all sides. 12. PENINSULA - Land with water on 3 sides.

  8. 13. PLATEAU – Flat land w/ higher elevation than surroundings, w/ @ least 1 steep side / cliff. 14. PLAIN - Large area of flat or rolling land.

  9. 15. DESERT – Large area of land w/ little rainfall. 16. MOUNTAIN – High elevation, steep slopes w/ a peak or summit.

  10. 17. MT. RANGE – Group of mountains Close together. 18. GLACIER – Large body of slow moving ice.

  11. 19. VOLCANO - Mt. by which lava escapes from the earth’s mantle. 20. ARCHIPELAGO - A group / chain of islands.

  12. 21. VALLEY – Low area between mts. 22. HILL – Lower than a mt. – have round tops.

  13. 23. SOURCE – The start of a body of water. 24. CORAL REEF – Large area of coral, found in warm SALT water.

  14. Homework • Create a map of a land using 15 of the items we discussed in class today. • Certain items should be named such as: • Mountains • Bays • Peninsulas • Islands • Lakes • Etc.. • List the 15 items you included on the back of your drawing • Map should be in color
