A Year Long InternshipSCCN799 Applied Supervision: Guidance Services (6 credits) • MU Graduate Studies Catalog: “A field based experience designed to develop the candidate’s leadership abilities in the implementation and supervision of comprehensive developmental guidance programs. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model provides guidelines for supervision.”

What is ASCA? • (ASCA) - With a membership of more than 25,000 school counseling professionals, ASCA focuses on providing professional development, enhancing school counseling programs and researching effective school counseling practices. ASCA is a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA). • ASCA's VisionThe American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is the foundation that expands the image and influence of professional school counselors through advocacy, leadership, collaboration and systemic change. ASCA empowers professional school counselors with the knowledge, skills, linkages, and resources to promote student success in the school, the home, the community, and the world. • ASCA's MissionThe mission of ASCA is to represent professional school counselors and to promote professionalism and ethical practices.

  4. No Specific Guidelines or Requirements • Program Coordinator: Nadine Garner Ed.D. • Apply the ASCA model to make changes/improvements to aspects of a guidance program at a school district. No specific guidelines, submit proposal for approval.

  5. Ideas • The LIU needs a standards-based model for school counseling • Two approach ideas 1. Work on the LIU Guidance Program 2. Work on LIU Counselor Trainings/Workshops

Create a LIU Guidance Program • Handbook • Framework: Foundation, Delivery, Management, and Accountability. • Foundation: Mission Statement, Vision, Program Benchmarks, performance standards, roles/duties of professional counselors. etc. • Delivery System: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, System Support • Management System: Time/Calendar of guidance events, Use of Data, Performance Evaluation/effectiveness of programs, etc. • Accountability: Student Outcomes, Evaluation of Programs/Systems, Disseminating Results.

  7. Develop Staff Trainings/Workshops Specifically For Counselors That Are In Line With ASCA Guidelines • Ethical Standards/Legal Issues • Effective School Counselors/Programs • Career/Transition Planning • Group Counseling • Child Abuse Awareness • Diversity Sensitivity Training • The Brain, Disorders, and Medicine • etc.
