  1. Dewey Decimal System This presentation will teach you how to properly shelve library materials according to the Dewey Decimal System

  2. Fiction • Our Fiction Collection is arranged alphabetically by author • Call numbers (spine labels) contain “F” for Fiction and the first 3 letters of the authors last name F JOH

  3. Last name, First Name • Pay attention to the whole last name when shelving • JOH can stand for Johnson, Johns, Johnstone, etc. • If you find more than 2 books with the same author last name, alphabetize by the author’s first name • Example • Johnson, Adam • Johnson, Barry • Johnson, Betty • Johnson, Michael

  4. More than one book by same author… • If you have more than one book by the same author, alphabetize by the title. • Note: Ignore, “A, An, The” if it is at the beginning of the title only • Steinbeck title examples: • 1. East of Eden • 2. The Grapes of Wrath • 3. Of Mice and Men

  5. Special Circumstances • Series: If an author writes a series and the number of the series is listed on the spine of the book (1, 2, 3.. Or I, II, III) • Organize these books by series number

  6. Biographies • Similar to Fiction, biographies are shelved by the person the book is about and the call number contains the first 3 letters of the subject’s last name • “B” and blue label indicates Biography • Example of a biography of John Adams: • B • ADA

  7. Biographies • You may have more than one book with subjects sharing the same last name. • Organize by last name and then alphabetically by first name • Examples for “Adams” • 1. Adams, Abigail • 2. Adams, John • 3. Adams, Samuel

  8. Biographies • If you have more than one book with the same subject (call number) organize by the title • Ignore “A, An, The” at the beginning • Books about John Adams examples: • 1. Early Americans • 2. The Founding Fathers • 3. Presidents

  9. Nonfiction • Nonfiction is a bit more difficult • Books are shelved by the Dewey Decimal call number which is organized by subject headings • The call number contains a number and 3 letters of the author’s last name 363.5 SMI

  10. Nonfiction • First shelve by the Dewey call number • If multiple books have the same call number, arrange them alphabetically by the letters • Examples: • 363 ARM • 363 SMI • 363.2 ARM • 363. 2 BOB
