  2. Setting: The story takes place at Camp Green lake, a juvenile detention center in the middle of Nowhere, Texas that requires the inmates to dig a five by five hole.

  3. Theme No matter how hard your life is or how much bad luck you have, you should never give up. Genre Fiction

  4. Stanley Yelnats The main character who is innocent of the crime he has been convicted of and has incredibly bad luck

  5. ZeroA quiet, uneducated guy abandoned by his mother who is very smart but doesn’t have the knowledge that he could.

  6. X-Ray The leader of the campers of Group D, he thinks that he is better then everyone else and that since he’s been there the longest he should get special treatment.

  7. Kissin’ Kate BarlowA school teacher turned outlaw that was pushed to the edge of sanity after her true love, Sam, was killed for kissing her. She only kisses the men she kills.

  8. Cause & Effect • Cause: Zero is a fast digger and can’t read. • Effect: Stanley taught Zero in exchange for him digging part of his hole. • Cause: X-Ray has been at Camp Green Lake the longest. • Effect: The campers in his tent let him push them around even though he is the smallest.

  9. Cause & Effect (con.) • Cause: Mr. Sir quit smoking • Effect: He constantly eats sunflower seeds. • Cause: Sam was killed for kissing Kate Barlow. • Effect: Kate kisses every man that she kills.
