  2. Ongoing Turmoil • Long history of political turmoil • Great conflict between Islamic extremists and the government • Protests in 2011 ousted Hosni Mubarak • Repressive rule under Mubarak - Security forces used brutal force - Many unexplained “disappearances” - Political dissent silenced

The Neighbours Next Door • Tunisian uprisings in December 2010 encouraged mass protests in the region, including Egypt (Arab Spring) • February 11, 2011 Mubarak “stepped down” – Fled Cairo- Sentenced to life in prison THEN WHAT? • Military ruled for about a year, unrest continued • Increased polarization between Islamists parties and more liberal and secular parties • After elections, Islamists parties in the lead

  4. Morsi • Morsi elected at end of 2012 – Islamist Brotherhood • His assembly approved a constitution that many secular groups claim violate women’s rights and freedom of expression • Anti-government protesters took to the street en mass once again • Violent repression continues…
