  1. Rational Expressions Objective: I will simplify rational expressions using multiplication and division Section: 9-4 SOL: AII. 1a

  2. Rational Expressions Remember a RATIONAL EXPRESSION can be expressed as a quotient of two polynomials.

  3. Remember, denominators can not = 0.

  4. Simplifying Rational Expressions

  5. Step 1: Factor the numerator and the denominator completely.

  6. Step 2: Divide the numerator and denominator by the common factor. What is the common factor?

  7. 1 1 Step 3: Multiply to get your answer.

  8. How do I find the values that make an expression undefined? Completely factor the ___________ denominator.

  9. What value of x would make the denominator 0? The expression is _____________at the values of x that will make the ___________ equal to 0.

  10. The expression is undefined when: a= __, __, and __ and b = __.

  11. Lets go through another example.

  12. Let’s try two more:

  13. Do you remember how to multiply fractions? First you multiply the numerators then multiply the denominators.

  14. The same method can be used to multiply rational expressions.

  15. Step #1: Factor all numerators and all denominators.

  16. Step #2: Divide the numerator and denominator by the common factors.

  17. Step #3: Multiply the numerator and the denominator. Remember how to divide fractions?

  18. 1 5 1 4 Dividing Fractions Multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor.

  19. Dividing rational expressions uses the same procedure. Ex: Divide:

  21. Let’s try one more:

  22. Now try these on your own.
