  17. Sustainability • If you search for more information in the internet: • Google: „sustainability“ • 21.000.000 links • Google: „Nachhaltigkeit“ • 900.000 links

  20. Sustainability

  21. Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“ • Malus Domestica ’Roter Boskoop’ • Martin Luther (1483-1546): • „Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,I would still plant my apple tree. “

  22. Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“ • The name of the apple tree is “malus” (meaning disaster or damage), which has its roots in Christian theology and symbolises the temptation of the apple which led to the expulsion from paradise. • Today we are faced with modern temptations and therefore the apple tree should remind us to take our responsibilities seriously and to consider our actions and their consequences carefully.

  23. Symbolic Tree Planting: „Apple Tree“ • The fact that the apple tree will be planted by many people together in front of the university entrance is of strong symbolic value. • The tree will thrive because it will be well-cared for, like our university educational system. Its fruit should be of benefit to many, like the results from research and development at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.

Measures have to be developed on a local basis.

  29. Executive Summary – Workshop B • Sustainability and Climate Change • Primary energy resources are diminishing rapidly and will vanish within a few decades. • In which extent can renewable energies replace primary resources? • With wooden products, material substitution effects outweigh production emissions. • The mechanism of sink systems have to be calculated for longer periods whereas Kyoto has rather short term objectives.

  30. Executive Summary – Workshop B • Sustainability and Climate Change • Transform thinking to stop the destruction of resources • Raise awareness • Reduce consumption • Lifestyle  quality of life • “Everybody of us is asked to define ‘quality of life’ for himself, to be more conscious about the effect of his doing”. • It is important to develop a holistic ecological sight as there are interacting problems of environmental, social, technological… nature. • “The complexity of the problem of global warming and climate change is not one by nature but one created by human kind.”
