Word of the Year 2005 • Sudoku, Trans fat and Bird flu. • “Introduction to Quantum Mechanics” a podcast series breaks the top 100 at the iTunes store in 2005 • Podcast Alley: 29000 podcasts.
Podcasting Definition • A collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio programs over the Internet using a publisher/subscriber model1. • iPod + broadcasting = podcasting. • Any PC or Mac with the appropriate podcatching software2 (iTunes, Fireant, Juice) will work for listening to podcasts. 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting 2. http://podcasts.psu.edu/podcatching
Podcasting: What is it? • A podcast is a MP3 audio file that is made available to the user (listener) through a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. • The MP3 file is linked by a web page. • Subscribers are provided with a hyperlink which they need to access ONCE. • The listening device then automatically downloads any new podcasts (episodes) as they become available.
Podcasting Process Access • Subscribe using podcatcher • Download episode • Playback episode • Create • Generate a script • Record episode • Edit episode • Distribute • Publish episode to webserver • Reference episode in feed
Reasons for the Explosive Growth1 • Pervasive Internet activity. • Rapid growth in broadband making it easier to “consume large media objects”. • The multimedia PC can be taken for granted. • The iPod phenomenon2 and “the rapid development and adoption of portable MP3 players”. 1. Podcasting: The Student’s Perspective It’s nice to put a voice with the instructor Having video & slides would be cool Podcasting is a great addition to the learning environment! Easy to listen to while traveling I hope all online classes start using podcasts Students should do presentations over podcast
