  1. ATLAS plans for a forward detector at `210m D.Macina, M.Nessi, G.Spigo

  2. ATLAS plans a small angle scattering experiment in the forward region, capable to do physics at high luminosity (AFP)

  3. Main requirements • 2 detector stations, 7-10m far a part • Detectors going as near as possible to the beam (10-15 sigmas?) • Detectors retractable in a garage position • Concept of an insertable beam pipe (Hamburg beam pipe concept) Thin windows: ~ 250-300 mum Dimensions: height ~ 15-20mm window length ~ 22mm floor length ~100 and 700mm Material austenitic steel (306 LN)

  4. Components : • Hamburg pipes with thin windows • Displacement bellows • Beam position monitors • Secondary vacuum chamber hosting the detectors • Moveable support table • Vacuum infrastructure • Positing motors infrastructure and controls • Detectors and services

  5. Next steps • Demonstrate on a prototype the thin window beam pipe concept and performance (summer 2012) • Design the final layout (chambers, secondary vacuum, bellows, movements, table, feedthroughs,…) by October 2012 • Clarify collimators (new TCL6)  by July 2012 • Study beam optics and all aspect related to the LHC operation, vacuum, beam impedance, e-cloud, heating and safety  by July 2012, coordinated by M.Galillee • December 2012 write TDR and get it approved by LHCC • Feb 2013 get LMC approval • Feb 2013 start Hamburg beam pipe construction • Feb 2014 install it in the beam line and test performances in situ • May 2014 install first detectors prototypes • 2016 detectors fully installed (during extended shutdowns) and operational
