Title: Fornicating Fruit Flies • Introduction: Today, you and a partner will generate and observe fruit fly offspring (babies) by mating a male and female fruit fly (species name: Drosophila melanogaster). Fruit flies are commonly used in genetics, the study of genes and patterns of inheritance. Inheritance is the passing of genes and traits from parent to offspring. • Organisms reproduce or produce new offspring using one of two methods: sexual or asexual reproduction. Most animals, like humans and fruit flies, generate offspring by sexual reproduction. The offspring from sexual reproduction inherit genetic information from two different organisms. In contrast, the offspring of asexual reproduction only inherit genetic information from one parent.
