  1. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES • Sawu as a software programmewasdesignedtodraw 2D and 3D imagesfromtherectilinearconstructions of warp-facedweaves, which are themostcomplex and interesting in theAndeanregion. • In terms of techniques, itallowsuserstodrawplainweave, balancedweaves, laddertechniques, simple and complexselected and reselectedtechniques (withfloating and supplementarythreads), and doble cloth. • Sawucannotdrawcrossedwarps, transposedwarpsorobliqueinterlacingtechniques, and anotherprogrammeInaSawuwasdesigned in the AHRC projectwiththis in mind. • In terms of structures, Sawudraws up to 8 levels of warp. • Itallowsuserstoappreciatethetrimensionality of Andean textiles. • Itallowsgreateranalysis and documentation of Andean textiles.

  2. DEFINITION • As a software programme, Sawuwasdesignedusing Visual Basic version 6.0. • Thedesign derives from: • Knowledgeabouttechnologicaltoolsthatformpart of language. • Mathematicalknowledgerelatedtogeometry, management of matrices, trignometricfunctions and others.

  3. DEFINITION (Cont.) • Thedesign of Sawualsodrawsonknowledge of thetextiledomain, withthesupport and supervision of thedomainexperts in theproject. • And knowledge of VRML (Virtual RealityModelingLanguage) technologyfortheconstruction of 3D images.

  4. FUNCTIONING • Sawufacilitatestextiledesigns in 2D. • Thesedesigns can be stored in a data base orsaved in anexternal file. • They can also be exported as animage file in “.bmp” (bitmap).

  5. FUNCTIONING (Cont.) • Itisthenpossibletogenerate a 3D image of thisdesign. • This 3 D image can be saved as a VRML file withtheextension “.wrl”.

  6. UTILITY • As a result, theSawuprogrammeallowsyoutorepresentanimageortextilestructure in 2D or 3D.

  7. PROGRAMME FORMAT • Theprogrammeformatconsistsbasically of a gridthatreplicatesthe 2D design, basedontheupperlevel of thetextilelayers. • Yousimplymake a clickon a cell, and colour in, ordrawthedesign.

  8. PROGRAMME FORMAT (Cont.) • Thereis a Menu and Toolbar, tofacilitateworkwiththeGrid. • Thereisalsoinformationaboutthenumber of warp and weftthreadsto be used.

  9. THE GRID • A drawing of a single textilefaceis done withthisGrid, in whichthecolumnsrepresentthewarpthreads, and therowsrepresenttheweftthreads.

  10. THE GRID (Cont.) • Dependingonthenumber of textilelayersyou are workingwith, eachcolumn of theGrid can in factrepresentoneorvariouswarpthreads. • Thismeansthatifyou are workingwith a weavingwith 3 layers, then a columnrepresentsthecombination of these 3 warpthreads. • In thisway, Sawuassimilatesthephenomenon of compressionthatexistsbetweenthewarpthreads in a real textile.

  11. THE GRID (Cont.)

  12. THE COLOUR GRID • BesidestheDesignGrid, thereisalso a ColourGrid. • Thisisfound in theupperpart of theDesignGrid.

  13. THE COLOUR GRID (Cont.) • TheColourGridcontainsthecolours of thewarpthreadsmaking up thetextile. • So bothGridshavethesamenumber of columns. • You can control thecolour of eachwarpthreadfromthisColourGrid, bymaking a doubleclickonthecorrespondingcell.

  14. MENU BAR • File menu • This has optionsrelatedtothecreationoropening of a designproject, thesaving and storing of data, deleting data, designexportation and exitfromtheprogramme.

  15. MENU BAR (Cont.) • Editionmenu • PresentstheoptionsforworkingwiththeGridcells, and editingthem.

  16. MENU BAR (Cont.) • The View Menu • Controlsthedropdownmenuforthewindows of the 3D representation, textileprofilesorsections, parameters, and theconversion of textilelayers.

  17. MENU BAR (Cont.) • Toolmenu • Presentsthedrop-downmenuoptionsforconfiguringtheGridcharacteristicsforvisualisingthedesign (expand, widen), and for 3D generation.

  18. MENU BAR (Cont.) • Languagemenu • Allowsyoutoselectthelanguageto use in theprogramme.

  19. MENU BAR (Cont.) • Helpmenu • Presentsthedrop-downmenuoptionsforHelpwiththeprogramme, and theprogrammeCredits.

  20. TOOL BAR • Presentsmost of theoptions in theMenu Bar described up tillnow, as well as othersthathelpwiththedesign, visualization, and informationabouttheGrid.

  21. TOOL BAR (Cont.) • Weftcolour: permitstheconfiguration of theweftcolour. • Activationbutton: permitstheactivationor non activation of workwiththeGridcells. • Presentsinformationaboutthenumber of warp and weftthreadsthatmake up thetextile.

  22. 3D REPRESENTATION WINDOW • These are threeindependentwindowsthat can containthewholeorjustparts of a 3D image of thedesignyouhavemade.

  23. PROFILE VIEW WINDOW • Shows theprofileorsectionview of a selectedcolumn in theGriddesign. • Italso shows thewarpthreadsthatmake up thiscolumn.

  24. PARAMETER WINDOW • Permitstheconfiguration of theworkingparameterssuch as: number of warp and weftthreads, weftlayout, and number of warplayers.

  25. LAYER CONVERSION WINDOW • Permitstheautomaticgeneration of the reverse side of thedrawing (and textile), onthebasis of theselection of coloursmadebytheUserfordesignswith more than 2 textilelayers.

  26. LAYER CONVERSION WINDOW (Cont.)

  27. 3D GENERATION WINDOW • Permitsconfiguringtheseparationbetweenthewarpthreads, and theselection of the 3D representationwindow:

  38. OTHER APPLICATIONS • Sawu can also be usedfordrawingreconstructedtextile figures thathavebeendamaged, byapplyingthesametechnique: SPA: 1356 (ILCA_SPA001)

  39. OTHER APPLICATIONS (Cont.) • Simple selectedtechniquewith a countof 2|2, appliedtothedamagedtextiletopermititsreconstruction: SPA: 1356 (ILCA_SPA001)

  40. OTHER APPLICATIONS (Contd.) • Sawu can be usedtoidentifydamagedtextile motives, againbydrawingthesametechnique: SPA: 1356 (ILCA_SPA001)

  41. CONCLUSIONS • Sawupermitstheelaboration of 2D drawings of eithertheupperface of a giventextile, orelse of aninventeddesign. • WithSawuitispossibleto configure thecolours of the individual warpthreads and weftthreadsthatmake up a textile. • Sawupermitsworkingwithtextile of variouslayers (up to 8). • Sawu can automaticallygeneratetheinverse of a textiledesignwith more than 2 layers, throughtheprocess of selectingcoloursbytheUser. • Thedesignachieved can be savedorexported in a 2D configuration. • Sawualsoallowsyouto show a profilesectionthroughoneorvariouswarpthreads, forgreatertextileanalysis.

  42. CONCLUSIONS (Cont.) • In addition, Sawupermitsthe 3D representation of a designmadewiththisprogramme. • The 3D construction can include a wholedesign of justparts of a design, throughthe use of 3 independentwindows. Thishelpsvisualisebetterthetextilestructure. • Itispossibletosavethe 3D imageconstructed as a VRML image. • So theSawuprogrammeis a workingtoolthatpermitsthe 2D and 3D representation of textilestructures and techniques in warp-facedweaves, forlateranalysis.
