  1. Twelfth Night Scene Modernization

  2. In groups of 4-5, you will be choosing one or two scenes from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to modernize and subsequently perform. Performances are roughly 7-10 minutes long. • Over spring break, you will choose what scene you and your group mates would like to translate and perform, and you will let Ms. Ince know which scene you have chosen when you get back from the break. What are we doing?

  3. 4-5 members per group • Each with a role; some examples are: • Translator • Researcher • Editor • Blocker/costumer/stage director (creative director) Who am I working with? What roles do we play in the group?

  4. Choose a STYLE of modernization. Examples include, but are not limited to: mafia, Hollywood, zombie apocalypse, Jersey shore, cowboy/Western, reality TV show (ie. Bachelor/Bachelorette), musical, etc. You may choose to change the names of the characters to suit the style you choose. • Translate your chosen scene. Make sure the language you use matches the style you choose. • Write up a script for your modernization. The formatting of the script needs to be similar to that used in your text (you don’t need sidebars). • Each person in your group will write up a short actor’s/actress’s biography (like those that go on the programs of plays you’ve seen) and attach it to the front of your final script. • Include a list of references with your scripts (did your group do any research to help with writing the script?) • You will then perform your scene for the class. Please make sure that costuming and props match whatever style you chose. How are we going to do this project? What are you looking for?

  5. Sample bio: Saras Ince is excited to be performing in her second minor role as Feste in Twelfth Night. A senior at Jakarta International School, she has appeared as the mayor’s daughter in a community performance of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and was formerly in charge of props for the high school production of The Chalk Circle. Upon graduation, Saras hopes to attend a Canadian university to study English literature. An avid reader and baker, she particularly enjoys stand-up comedy and live performances, but will make an exception to see epic blockbusters in movie theatres (or anything with Natalie Portman in it). Saras would like to thank her parents for their support and also acknowledge the tireless devotion of her two dogs, Jessie and Tipper. Saras dedicates her performance to the one and only William Shakespeare, whose way with words makes her heart melt and has led her to develop a crush on Hamlet in Hamlet.
