The Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Slavery Debate: Struggles for Freedom in America

Chapter 18 explores the contentious debate over slavery leading to the war in Kansas, including the introduction of the Wilmot Proviso which aimed to ban slavery in U.S. territories. California's admission as a free state and the implementation of the Fugitive Slave Act are key events. The chapter highlights Stephen Douglas's Kansas-Nebraska Act and the ensuing violence, such as the "Sack of Lawrence" and the Pottawatomie Massacre led by John Brown. It also examines the role of significant figures like Henry Clay and Harriet Beecher Stowe in shaping public sentiment against slavery.
