Exciting Multicast Launch by Brandon Butterworth on Thursday

Get ready for the formal launch of the BBC multicast by Brandon Butterworth this Thursday. Check out www.bbc.co.uk/multicast for a sneak preview. ISPs have been eagerly awaiting this, though there have been delays in rights agreements. Progress has been made since August with H264 8Mbit HDTV trials in January. Don't panic if things don't work initially; this is a technical trial. Join in when ready!

  3. Didn’t we do this already? • Olympics was some time ago, with a few sporting events since • ISPs been waiting too • Delay in agreeing rights • It is just cable TV • Still had to be worked through

  4. Progress since August • Previous presentation is on http://support.bbc.co.uk/multicast • H264 8Mbit HDTV tested in Jan with early access STB, more trials in the summer • Other broadcasters now involved

  5. Don’t panic • Technical trial so we expect things will not work and need fixing • We can add ISPs as we go, join in when you’re ready • Manage user expectation - most won’t get it yet

  6. Formats • Video • Real, WM @ 360K • H264 @ 1.2M • MPEG2 @ 5M • Audio - AAC @ 128K

Multicast Trial Network • Standalone infrastructure, http://support.bbc.co.uk/multicast/peering/ AS31459 UK, AS34158 International - later, this is UK only for now • Dedicated LINX & LoNAP ports, PIs in Telehouse North if required. • UK only routes as per BBCi Broadband. • All welcome multicast-tech@bbc.co.uk
