PESSCL Physical education, school sports and club links is a national strategy with the aim of: Target is measured annually through the National school sport survey The strategy is delivered through 9 interlinked strands: • Sports Colleges • School sport partnerships • Step into Sport • Club links • Professional development • Gifted and talented • Sporting playgrounds • Swimming • PE and School sport investigation (QCA) Increasing the number of 5-16 year olds experiencing 2 hours of high quality PE and school sport each week to 85%

Sports Colleges Sports colleges are part of the specialist school programme run by the Department for children, schools and families (DCSF) (formerly the department for education and skills, DfES) • Sport colleges help to deliver the government’s plans for PE and sport by... • Promoting excellence in Pe and sport within the community • Extending links between families of schools, sports bodies and local communities • Sharing resources and good practice • Helping young people progress into careers in PE and sport Features of Sports Colleges • Increased funding • Links to community clubs • Enhanced facilities • Links to feeder primary schools • Additional top qualified staff • Serving the local community • Grants and funding to improve facilities • Links to UK sport institutes

School Sport Partnerships (SSP) Groups of schools receiving funding from the government to enhance sporting opportunities • 450 partnerships nationwide Aims • Enhance opportunities for young people to experience different sports • Access high quality coaching and facilities • Engage in competition • Help schools meet the 2 hours a week of high quality PE and school sport (6 objectives) • Strategic planning- develop and implement a strategy • Primary liaison- develop links between key stages 2 and 3 • Out of school hours- provide enhanced opportunities for all • School to Community- increase participation in community sport • Coaching and leadership- senior pupils, teachers and other adults • Raising standards of pupil achievement

School Sport Partnerships (SSP) Structure • Partnerships are clustered around a Sports college • 8 secondary schools (typically) • 45 primary school (typically) Roles • Partnership Development Manager (PDM) • Based in Sports college • Develops links with LEA and other organisations • School Sports Co-ordinator (SSCo) • PE teachers in secondary school released form timetable 2 days a week • Work with cluster of primary schools to develop after school activities and community links • Primary Link Teacher (PLT) • Primary school teachers released form timetable 12 days a year to develop PE and school sport • Competition Manager • Added to network in 2004 to increase interschool competition across partnership

Other key strands Step into Sport • Part of National School strategy • Managed by Sport England and Youth Sport Trust • Provides a high quality sports-leadership training programme • Focused around 14-19 year olds • Volunteering allows young people to take part in a variety of roles in the local community • Support them to develop skills, knowledge, confidence and qualification. Club Links • An agreement between a school (or SSP) and a community based sports club to work together. • Can provide varied opportunities • Ensures standards remain high • Main aim is to Increase the number of children participating in club sport • 22 NGBs get funding to work together with their clubs to create and strengthen links with schools • Progress has been made, 800 multi skills have been set up for primary school children • Also targets ‘Dance links’
