  1. Teacher: Miss Moore Class: 6BStudent Name: Jhon Pierre Maxwell Geography: Temperate Grasslands

  2. Temperate Grasslands • Define: Temperate grasslands are composed of a rich mix of grasses and forbs and underlain by the world’s most fertile soils.

  3. Temperate grasslands are found in North America in the prairies and great plains of the United States and Canada. • In Asia the grassland are known as Steppes, stretching from Ukraine to the eastern part of Russia. • The Puszta in Hungary and south America grassland in Argentina and Uruguay known as the Pampas. Locations of Temperate Grasslands: North American Prairies The Russian Steppes South American Pampas The African Veldt Hungarian Puszta The Australian Grasslands and Tableland.

  4. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION

  5. Temperature THE TEMPERATE GRASSLANDS VARIES GREATLY DEPENDING UPON THE TIME OF THE YEAR. Summer Winter • ARE HOT • CAN EXCEED 100 degrees Fahrenheit. • ARE COLD • CAN DROP TO 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit • Most of the grasses of a temperate grassland are short • Some little more than a few feet tall but with root systems that can extend many times that length beneath the ground. • This is an adaptation of temperature.

  6. PRECIPITATION Rainfall in temperate grasslands of the world falls into the moderate category. The average is 20 to 25 inches per year; occurring mostly in late spring and early summer The lack of rain produces a dryer climate with shorter grasses, the climate is subjected to periodic droughts.

  7. DISTRIBUTION OF PRECIPATATION

  8. Fire • During that hot, dry seasons characterized of the temperate grassland, fires are common • These fires also return nutrients rich ash to the soil, increasing fertility and making it possible for the growth of damaged flora.

  9. Soil • With Temperate Grasslands like the Steppes in Russia are associated with soil type Chernozem • There is an upward movement of water through the soil. • The soil is a pedocal, owning to the organic matter throughout • It is good for Agri. • Thickly matted root system reduce the risk of soil erosion. • The grasses draw up calcium, causing an accumulation of bases at the surface. • Some leaching does occur, associated with snowmelt in spring and periodic thunderstorm during the late summer.

  11. Conclusion Temperate grasslands are found in several locations on earth. They are characterized by the abundance of grasses and the absence of trees and shrubs. The temperature and climate are moderate as indicated by the temperate designation. The amount of precipitation varies from one location to another, affecting the height of grasses. Occasional drought conditions lead to fires which affect the climate and make up of the grasslands.
