  1. Germans Came to America to escape political conflicts.

  2. Irish People • Came here because of the Potato Famine. • Killed thousands. They were starving.

  3. Chinese • Came to America to work on the Transcontinental Railroad. • as the "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a 1,907-mile (3,069 km) contiguous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 across the western United States to connect the Pacific coast at San Francisco Bay with the existing Eastern U.S. rail network at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the Missouri River.

  4. Chinese Exclusion act of 1882 • Forbid Chinese immigrants from coming to America.

  5. Jewish People • Came to the U.S. to escape religious persecution.

  6. Push and Pull factors • Push Factors are those that push someone out of their own country. • PULL FACTORS: are things that attract someone to a new country.

  7. Economic Interdependence • Where countries are dependent on one another. • Example: The colonies produce materials. (lumber, Tobacco) Ship these to Europe. European manufactures make things out of these materials. Sell the products back to the colonies.

  8. Mercantilism • The belief that the nation should export more than they import.

  9. Missouri Compromise • Missouri became the boundary for NEW STATES. • North of Missouri are FREE • South of Missouri are SLAVE STATES.

  10. Manifest Destiny • Those that felt it was the U.S. destiny to conquer and control all the territory between MEXICO and Canada to the Atlantic to the Pacific

  11. Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildalgo • Required Mexico to sell New Mexico and California to U.S.

  12. Gadsden Purchase • Gave the U.S. parts of present day New Mexico and Arizona.

  13. Direct Democracy • Voters elect leaders directly. • We get our Democracy from GREECE.

  14. Autocracy • Power is in the hands of a single person such as a king or queen with unlimited power. • Dictatorship: single ruler with no restrictions. • Monarchy: Ruled by a KING OR QUEEN.

  15. Federalism • The U.S. has this • The national and state government have authority over certain areas.

  16. Impeachment • To take the president out of power for breaking the law. • The House of Rep has the authority to Impeach. • It goes before the Senate. If 2/3 vote guilty he is impeached. • Only 2 pres ever impeached. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. BOTH FOUND NOT GUILTY BY THE SENATE.

  17. Senate • Has 2 senators from Each State. • Vice president resides over the senate.

  18. President’s cabinet or the joint chiefs of Staff • Secretary of State: advises president on foreign affairs. • Secretary of Defense: in charge of the military • Attorney General: nations top law enforcement official> Over the FBI • These are appointed by the Pres but must be voted on by the SENATE>>>>>

  19. Supreme Court • Highest court in the land. • They are appointed by the president for LIFE • They REVIEW the LaWs

  20. Electoral college • This body of delegates that meets every four years to elect a president. • 270 is the magic number of electoral votes to become president.

  21. Filibuster • Is used to stop a vote on a bill. A senator talks until the bill is withdrawn or other senators can convince colleagues to vote NO….

  22. Diplomacy • This is where world leaders meet to discuss work and workout peaceful solutions to international problems.

  23. Treaties • Are formal agreements between nations. Leaders sign these knowing that they will give and the other country will get in return.

  24. Free Trade • No limitations or barriers on trade. • Unlike the Embargo Act from Jefferson .

  25. Sanctions • Limitations on trade with a certain country • These are put on a country to force them to change their behavior.

  26. Monroe doctrine • Stated that the United States would not accept Europe interfering in the Western Hemisphere and that the Americas were no longer open to Colonization. • James Monroe established this doctrine in 1823

  27. Presidential summit • A meeting of world leaders.

  28. NATIONALSECURITY • INVOLES PROTECTING THE COUNTRY FROM OUTSIDE THREATS.
