  2. Interview with Inga It took Inga 4 weeks to get Australia by ship and she arrived in December 1950. She came because her mum and dad wanted to start a new life with their children after the devastation and horror of war. One of her favourite foods was black bread with butter and sugar.

  3. German Food Some of the foods are black breads, chicken schnitzel and mashed potatoes. The Germans love to eat and drink. Over hundreds of years they have developed a warm, rich and delicious cuisine, where servings are always generous, making Germany ‘comfort food’ central.

  4. Oktoberfest ManyAustralians enjoy German celebrations. One of the popular German celebrations is Oktoberfest, and is the biggest beer festival in the world.

  5. When did Germans come to Australia? Germans came to Australia in 1838. By 1864 there were already around 13 German associations in Victoria's gold field towns. Hundreds more Germans rushed to Victoria hoping to strike gold. After 1945, they came because of war and to escape religious persecution.
