  2. What Cultures Came?

  3. Germans • Germans were the largest group of people who came to Ohio • They were also one of the first groups to come to Ohio • Most Germans migrated from Pennsylvania • Many came to help build the canals

  4. Irish • Many Irish came to Ohio as a result of the Potato Famine. • They lost their homes and needed a new life. • They wanted to be farmers, but ended up taking some of the hardest jobs for the smallest pay.

  5. Italians • Most Italians settled in Cleveland or along Lake Erie. • Most worked in factories, as waiters, or as cooks in restaurants. • Some started their own businesses selling traditional Italian products such as clothing.

  6. Reasons they came • Opportunities in: • Mining • Agriculture • Manufacturing • Family Ties • Freedom from religious and political oppression

  7. What do we still have? • Cultural centers within cities • Germantown • Youngstown (Italian) • Little Italy (Toledo) • Churches and Cathedrals • Foods and Festivals
